Facial Trauma

Fortunately, since the introduction of mandatory seat belt laws, the incidence of facial trauma has decreased significantly. However, the face still can be traumatized in motor vehicle accidents, altercations, falls and sports-related injuries.

The nose is the most commonly broken bone in any facial trauma. The cheekbones and jawbone also can sustain fractures. These injuries often are accompanied by cuts and bruises on the face. It is imperative to quickly and properly repair such wounds to minimize facial scarring.

Facial bone fractures are repaired following the same principles used for bone repair elsewhere in the body. This can include surgical placement of metallic plates, or wiring the jaws to immobilize them for four to six weeks.
